The Ask
YWCA Columbus partnered with Bonfire Red to produce original video content for use during their annual Activists and Agitators event with Ibram X. Kendi as the keynote speaker. The theme for this event was “Learning our Lesson: Anti-Racism in Education."
The Challenge
Our challenge was to convey a complicated and systematic societal issue in an easy-to-digest film, intended to educate and not alienate. Since it was intended to be viewed at such a major event, it also needed to grab and hold the attention of a large audience of stakeholders from across the organization.
Pulling it all Together
With the help of documentary director/editor Ian McGee, historic footage/imagery was curated to contrast the present-day perspectives and experiences we captured through interviews with local students, teachers, and advocates. Combined with a scripted VoiceOver, we wove the new and historical content together to craft a film that sought to bring awareness and hope to the topic of racism in education and legislation.
